Cookie Consent Website Fixes for Businesses in Ireland
Many Irish websites show a cookie banner but still load analytics, ad pixels and video embeds the moment a page opens, or offer a large Accept button with Reject tucked away behind a settings link. The Data Protection Commission's cookie guidance treats both as problems.
We fix the technical side: what loads, when it loads, how the banner presents the choice and how that choice is recorded. Our team works remotely from India on WordPress-based, Magento and custom Laravel websites. This is technical work, not legal advice.
Ask for a cookie consent check on your Irish website
Send your website address, the platform it runs on and the consent tool or plugin you use now, if any. A note on any complaint or DPC contact helps us prioritise.
What the DPC cookie guidance expects from an Irish website
The Data Protection Commission published its guidance note on cookies and other tracking technologies in April 2020, alongside a report on its sweep of Irish websites. When we checked in October 2026, the April 2020 guidance note was still the version linked from the DPC's cookies guidance page. It applies the ePrivacy Regulations (S.I. No. 336 of 2011) and the GDPR standard of consent.
Nothing non-essential before consent
Analytics, advertising and social media cookies, tracking pixels and similar technologies should only run after the visitor agrees. Cookies that are strictly necessary for a service the visitor asked for are exempt.
Reject as visible as accept
The guidance says the banner must not nudge visitors towards accepting. If there is an Accept button, the option to refuse should get equal prominence, not sit in a grey link or a second screen.
No pre-ticked boxes or bundled consent
Consent should be given for each purpose, and boxes for optional categories must start unticked. Scrolling or continuing to browse does not count as consent.
Easy withdrawal
Visitors must be able to change their mind later. That usually means a persistent cookie settings link that reopens the choices on every page.
Consent renewed within six months
The DPC considers six months the outer limit for keeping a stored consent before the visitor is asked again.
Clear cookie information
Your cookie information should explain each cookie's purpose, list the cookie names and how long each one lasts, and say which third parties receive data.
Where cookie banners on Irish business websites usually fall short
The banner people see is only half of consent. Most problems we look for are in what the page actually loads behind it, which you can see in the browser's network panel but not by looking at the design.
Tags that fire before the banner is answered
A typical case: Google Analytics, a Meta pixel or a remarketing tag is hard-coded into the theme header, or added by a marketing plugin, so it runs before the consent tool has a chance to block it. The banner looks right but changes nothing.
Embedded videos, maps and chat widgets
YouTube videos, Google Maps, social feeds and live chat tools often set their own cookies as soon as they load. A compliant set-up shows a placeholder with a short explanation and only loads the embed once the visitor accepts that category, or uses privacy-enhanced embed options where they exist.
No way back to the settings
Visitors who accepted once are often unable to change their choice without clearing their browser data. The DPC's sweep report noted that some sites gave visitors no way to change their settings later.
Cookie lists that no longer match the site
Cookie policies written years ago rarely reflect the plugins, tags and embeds added since. If the list on the page differs from what the browser actually stores, the information you give visitors is inaccurate.
How we bring cookie consent on an Irish website into line
Each step is carried out on a staging copy where your hosting allows, then repeated on the live site.
Tag and cookie audit
We load key pages in a clean browser and record every cookie, local storage entry and third-party request before any choice is made, after accepting and after rejecting. You get the list with each item's source.
Classification
Each item is grouped as strictly necessary, preferences, analytics or marketing. Where the right category is unclear, we flag it so you or your adviser can decide.
Banner and choice design
We configure your existing consent tool or a replacement so Accept and Reject sit side by side with equal weight, optional categories start unticked and a settings link stays available on every page.
Script blocking
Non-essential scripts are moved behind consent, so they load only after the visitor agrees to that category. Hard-coded snippets are removed from templates and re-added through the consent layer or tag manager.
Consent record and renewal
We make sure the consent tool stores which choice was made, when and against which version of the banner, and set the consent lifetime to six months or less.
Cookie information page
We structure the cookie page with a table of names, purposes, durations and providers that matches the audit, ready for your own wording or your legal adviser's review.
Retest and handover
We repeat the audit after the changes and send the before-and-after results, so you can see that rejecting really stops the optional tags.
Cookie consent fixes on WordPress, Magento and Laravel sites
The DPC's expectations are the same on every platform. What changes is where tracking code tends to hide.
| Platform | Common source of the problem | How we usually fix it |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress-based sites and stores | Several plugins each adding their own tracking; snippets pasted into the theme header; a consent plugin not connected to the tags it should control | Remove duplicate snippets, route tags through one consent-aware set-up, and confirm the consent plugin blocks scripts rather than only displaying a notice |
| Magento | Analytics and marketing modules with their own settings; tracking added directly to layout templates; full-page caching serving a cached banner state | Gate module output on consent, move template snippets behind the consent layer and check that caching does not serve one visitor's choice to another |
| Custom Laravel applications | Scripts written straight into Blade layouts; no central list of third-party services | Add a small consent component that reads the stored choice and loads each category's scripts only when it has been accepted |

Remote delivery from India for Irish site owners
Our team works from Thrissur and Indiranagar, Bengaluru. India is 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of Irish time, depending on the time of year, so we usually make changes during your morning, ahead of your working day, and we can arrange calls in your morning or early afternoon.
We need an administrator or developer login for the site, access to your tag manager if you use one, and ideally a staging copy. Access stays in your name and you can remove it when the work is finished.
Illustrative example
Illustrative example, not a real client: a Dublin retailer's WordPress-based store shows a banner with a single Accept button. The audit finds an analytics tag in the theme header, a marketing pixel added by a plugin and a YouTube embed on the home page, all loading before any choice. The fix adds an equal Reject button and category settings, moves both tags behind consent, swaps the video for a click-to-load placeholder, and updates the cookie table to match.
Who will be making changes to your website's consent set-up
This work is done by Appeonix Creative Lab, an Indian micro enterprise registered under Udyam since 2014, with a head office in Thrissur and an office in Indiranagar, Bengaluru. We also hold an Ontario business name registration. We have no office or staff in Ireland, and we do not give legal advice. For questions about how the law applies to your business, speak to a solicitor or data protection adviser. We implement the technical changes you and they settle on.

Cookie consent questions from Irish site owners
Does a small Irish website need a cookie banner if it only uses basic cookies?
If every cookie is strictly necessary, for example a shopping basket or login session, consent is not needed, but you should still explain what is used. As soon as analytics, advertising pixels or third-party embeds are added, consent is needed before they load. Our audit shows which situation applies to your site.
Can Google Analytics run before a visitor answers the banner?
Not under the DPC's guidance, which expects consent for analytics cookies. We configure the site so analytics only sets cookies after the visitor accepts that category, and we show you the before-and-after network results.
Will you confirm that our website is legally compliant once the work is done?
No. We can show you technically what loads before and after consent and how the banner presents the choice, measured against the points in the DPC guidance. Whether your business meets its legal obligations is a question for a solicitor or data protection adviser.
Do we have to replace the consent plugin or tool we already pay for?
Usually not. Many tools can meet the guidance once they are set up correctly and connected to the scripts they are meant to control. We only recommend replacing a tool if it cannot block scripts or present Reject with equal prominence.
Will blocking tags until consent change our analytics and ad reports?
Yes. Visitors who reject will not appear in cookie-based reports, so recorded traffic and conversions usually drop after the fix. We explain this before we start so your team can read the reports in that light.
